Padma Lakshmi Biography

Padma Parvati Lakshmi was born on September 1, 1970 in the Southern Indian State of Kerala, India. While she grew up in Chennai, Lakshmi spent most of her teenage years in the United States.

In 1990, Padma’s career began after being discovered by a modeling agent sitting in a café in Spain. Being one of the first three Indian models to have a career in Milan, Paris and New York, Padma has modeled for renowned designers such as Ralph Lauren, Emanuel Ungaro and Alberta Ferreti. She also became the face for Versus and Roberto Cavalli. Throughout her modeling career, Padma Lakshmi has graced the magazine covers of Cosmopolitan, L’Officiel India, Newsweek, Asian Woman, Avenue and Industry.

About Padma Lakshmi

Padma Lakshmi started her career at 20 years old after being discovered by a modeling agency in Spain. She became the second Indian model to have a successful modeling career in Milan, Paris and New York, after former Miss India Persis Khambatta who modeled for Revlon.

Lakshmi modeled for international top designers like Ralph Lauren, Alberta Ferretti and Emanuel Ungaro. She also worked on several ad campaigns for Versus and Roberto Cavalli. Padma Lakshmi appeared on the magazine covers of January 2002 Cosmopolitan, March 2006 Newsweek, May 2006 Asian Woman, July 2006 Avenue, February 2007 Industry and three covers of L’Officiel India. She was also named #66 of AskMen.com’s list of “The Most Desirable Women of 2008”.

Lakshmi isn’t just a model – she also appeared in several movies and TV series. Lakshmi had a supporting role in Mariah Carey’s 2001 film, Glitter and 2003 Hindi movie Boom. Her last two films were the 2005 ‘The Mistress of Spices’ with Ashwarya Rai and ‘Kamagata Maru’. In the TV series Star Trek: Enterprise, Padma Lakshmi appeared as an alien princess in the 37th episode. She also appeared in the series, Sharpe’s Challenge from 2004 and 2005 and in the 2006 series, “The Ten Commandments”. Lakshmi pumped up her career when she became the hostess of Italy show, Domenica In and the host for TV cooking reality show, Top Chef since 2006 to the latest season.

Padma Lakshmi proved her versatility when she released her own cookbook “Easy Exotic” and won the 1999 ‘Best First Book’ at the World Cookbook Awards. In 2007, Padma Lakshmi released her second cookbook entitled, “Tangy, Tart, Hot and Sweet”. She also became a Food Network star with her own show, Padma’s Passport.
