Meg Ryan was born on November 19, 1961 as Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra in Fairfield Connecticut. With the support of Meg’s mom Susan, who was a former actress and casting director in New York, Meg Ryan’s interest in acting was encouraged at an early age. While studying Journalism at the University of Connecticut and at New York University, the 18-year-old Meg Ryan appeared in her first TV commercial for “Tickle” deodorant, followed by other ads to earn some extra money, but her success led to more opportunities in Hollywood.
At age 21, Meg Ryan was cast in the daytime drama, “As the World Turns” as Betsy Stewart, which she played for two years. She later appeared in several made-for-TV films, such as “Amityville 3-D” and “Promised Land,” a film where she earned her first Independent Spirit Award nomination. By 1986, Meg Ryan appeared in the movie “Top Gun” alongside Dennis Quaid, followed by “D.O.A.” and “The Presidio.” However, Ryan’s film breakthrough was the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally” with Billy Crystal. Her role as Sally earned her a Golden Globe nod.
In 1990, Meg Ryan starred in the “Joe Versus the Volcano” film alongside Tom Hanks, who Ryan will be paired for two other films. She also appeared in the movies “The Doors” and “Prelude to a Kiss” before starring in another hugely successful 1993 romantic comedy “Sleepless in Seattle” with Tom Hanks. In hopes of trying to break away from romantic comedy flicks, Meg Ryan played an alcoholic in the drama, “When a Man Loves a Woman,” wherein she earned critical acclaim for her acting. She then worked on “Courage under Fire” as a captain in the Gulf War, but returned back to her roots and starred in the romantic comedy “French Kiss” alongside Kevin Kline.
After lending her voice in the 1997 animated film “Anastasia,” Meg Ryan appeared in two financially successful films in 1998 – the “City of Angels” with Nicholas Cage earned about $200 million worldwide and “You’ve Got Mail” again with Tom Hanks made over $250 million. By the start of the millennium, Ryan has become one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood with a $15 million paycheck for her 2000 film “Proof of Life.” Also in 2000, Meg Ryan starred in a comedy flick with Diane Keaton in “Hanging Up,” and the romantic comedy “Kate & Leopold” the following year.
Meg Ryan surprised her fans by appearing in a serious film, the 2003 crime thriller “In the Cut.” Ryan played the role of Sarah in the movie, “In the Land of Women,” which earned critical praise. She then appeared with Antonio Banderas in the romantic comedy “My Mom’s New Boyfriend” and the remake of the 1939 film “The Women,” which were both released in 2008.
