Meg Ryan Biography

Meg Ryan was born on November 19, 1961 as Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra in Fairfield Connecticut. With the support of Meg’s mom Susan, who was a former actress and casting director in New York, Meg Ryan’s interest in acting was encouraged at an early age. While studying Journalism at the University of Connecticut and at New York University, the 18-year-old Meg Ryan appeared in her first TV commercial for “Tickle” deodorant, followed by other ads to earn some extra money, but her success led to more opportunities in Hollywood.

At age 21, Meg Ryan was cast in the daytime drama, “As the World Turns” as Betsy Stewart, which she played for two years. She later appeared in several made-for-TV films, such as “Amityville 3-D” and “Promised Land,” a film where she earned her first Independent Spirit Award nomination. By 1986, Meg Ryan appeared in the movie “Top Gun” alongside Dennis Quaid, followed by “D.O.A.” and “The Presidio.” However, Ryan’s film breakthrough was the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally” with Billy Crystal. Her role as Sally earned her a Golden Globe nod.

Meg Ryan started her career at 18 years old as a TV commercial model for Tickle deodorant. After a small role in Rich and Famous, Meg Ryan became Betsy Steward in the daytime drama, As the World Turns from 1982-1984. Ryan then starred in several TV films and movies, including Amityville 3D, Promised Land, Top Gun, D.O.A and Presidio, but only received her leading role in the 1989 romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally, earning her a Golden Globe nomination. Since then, Meg Ryan starred in several romantic films, including Prelude to a Kiss, Sleepless in Seattle and When a Man Loves a Woman, making her the number one America’s Sweetheart during that time.

Ryan starred in Courage Under Fire, which was a huge success at the box office and later starred in another romantic comedy, French Kiss. After starring in the movie, City of Angels alongside Nicolas Cage, Ryan was on the top of her game and reunited with Sleepless in Seattle co-star Tom Hanks in the romantic comedy film, You’ve Got Mail. After an unsuccessful movie Proof of Life, Ryan immediately went back to her game and starred in box-office hits like Hanging Up with Diane Keaton and Kate & Leopold with Hugh Jackman. Meg Ryan then starred in a crime thriller, In the Cut. Meg Ryan’s latest films include ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’, ‘In the Land of Women’ and ‘The Women’.
