Jennifer Beals was born on December 19, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Francis W. Parker School, Beals pursued a degree in American Literature and graduated from Yale University in 1987. Her first experience in the entertainment industry was a small role in the 1980 comedy-drama movie “My Bodyguard.” Jennifer’s next acting gig, a starring role in the 1983 musical flick “Flashdance”, made her a star. In the film, she portrayed a 19-year-old welder/dancer who dreams to join a renowned dance school. For her work on “Flashdance,” Jennifer earned her first Golden Globe nomination and received a “Best Song” Academy Award.
Throughout the mid-1980s to 1990, Jennifer Beals worked on several mythological-based films, including the 1985 gothic horror flick “The Bride” alongside Sting and the 1985 made-for-TV movie, “Faerie Tale Theatre: Cinderella.” She also starred in the 1989 film “Vampire’s Kiss” opposite Nicolas Cage. By early 1990s, Jennifer Beals appeared on various movies, including “Blood and Concrete” in 1991, the Sundance-winning film “In the Soup” and “Indecency” in 1992, “Caro Diario” and “The Night Owl” in 1993 and “Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle” in 1994.
1995 was a big year for Jennifer Beals as she made several notable appearances in the films “Let It Be Me,” and “The Thief and the Cobbler.” That same year, Jennifer co-starred with Denzel Washington in the neo-noir film “Devil in a Blue Dress” and appeared in Tim Roth’s 4-story anthology “Four Rooms.” Beals worked on more films throughout the end of the 1990s – including the 1997 films “Wishful Thinking” and “The Twilight of the Golds,” followed by “The Prophecy II,” “The Spree,” “The Last Days of Disco,” and “Fear of Flying.” Aside from films, Jennifer Beals also appeared on various TV series, including “Without Malice” and “A House Divided” in 2000, “After the Storm” and “The Feast of All Saints” and “They Shoot Divas, Don’t They?” in 2002.
From 2000 to 2005, Jennifer Beals appeared on “Militia,” “Out of Line,” “The Anniversary Party,” “13 Moons,” “Roger Dodger,” “Runaway Jury,” “Catch That Kid,” and “Desolation Sound.” In 2006, Beals starred in the horror flick “The Grudge 2” and appeared in the TV drama “My Name is Sarah” the following year. Jennifer Beals’ most recent work is on the Showtime Network drama series, “The L Word,” where she joined in 2004 and continues to portray the affluent Bette Porter. She is also set to appear on the movie, “Joueuse.”
