Gloria Estefan, who was born in September 1, 1957 on Havana Cuba, is one of the most successful songwriter-singer in the world. Estefan has sold over 26 million albums in the United States alone and 90 million albums worldwide. However, she wasn’t born rich; Gloria Estefan’s first performance was at a large Cuban wedding, where she met future husband Emilio Estefan Jr., who asked her to join their band, “The Miami Latin Boys.” When Gloria agreed, the band became known as the “Miami Sound Machine.”

In the 1980s, the Miami Sound Machine released three successful albums – the 1984 “Eyes of Innocence,” the 1987 multi-platinum album, “Let it Loose” and the repackaged version of Let it Loose “Anything for You” in 1989, which became the #1 album in UK, Canada, Australia and The Netherlands. In 1988, the group’s name was changed to ‘Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine,’ but dropped ‘Miami Sound Machine’ altogether the following year. Estefan was credited as a solo artist, but Gloria kept the Miami Sound Machine as her backing band throughout her career. In 1989, Estefan released “Cuts Both Ways,” which remains her best-selling album to date.

In the 1990s, Gloria Estefan released several albums, all of which made it big on music charts. Gloria suffered a fractured spine during her 1990 tour for “Cuts Both Ways”, but it didn’t keep her from creating good music. By 1991, she released her comeback album “Into the Light” and her first hit-list album “Gloria Estefan Greatest Hits” the following year. Estefan then worked on her first Spanish-language album “Mi Tierra,” which was released in 1993 and was named “Best Tropical Latin Album” at the Grammys. Also in 1993, Gloria’s first Christmas album, “Christmas Through Your Eyes,” was released and reached Platinum in the United States. She then released the 1994 cover album “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” that featured Gloria’s favorite songs from the 60s and 70s, followed by another Spanish-language album “Abriendo Puertas” in 1995.

A new Gloria Estefan album “Destiny” was released in 1996 and a dance album “Gloria!” in 1998. Estefan ended the decade with a starring role on the 1999 movie, “Music of the Heart” and started the 20th century with an appearance on the film, “For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story.” Since 2000, Gloria Estefan has released several albums, including “Alma Caribeña” in 2000, “Greatest Hits Vol. II” in 2001 “Unwrapped” in 2003, “The Essential Gloria Estefan” collection in 2006 and the “90 Millas” album in 2007.

Gloria Estefan has collaborated with various artists, including Frank Sinatra, Luciano Pavarotti, *NSYNC, Stevie Wonder and the Brazilian group, So Pra Contrariar, among others. She also appeared on the seventh season of American Idol, performing for the “Idol Gives Back” charity episode. Gloria Estefan has received numerous awards throughout her 30-year music career, including five Grammys, an Ellis Island Congressional Medal of Honor, the Hispanic Heritage Award, two ACE Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, among other awards and honoraries.
