Fiona Apple Biography
Fiona Apple, born September 13, 1977 in New York, is the daughter of actor Brandon Maggart and singer Diane McAfee. Aside from her parents, Fiona Apple’s maternal grandparents also had successful careers as a dancer for the George White’s Scandals musical (Millicent Green) and vocalist of the big band era (Johnny McAfee). Fionna Apple’s brothers and sisters are also part of the entertainment industry, with a cabaret-singer sister Maude Maggart, a director half-brother Spencer Maggart and actor half-brother Garrett Maggart. With such talent on Fiona Apple’s genes, it was never a shock that she also had a passion for music.
Fiona’s break into the music industry came when she was 17, after giving a three-song demo tape to a friend who babysits for music publicist Kathryn Schenker, who then passed the tape on to manager-producer Andy Slater. Fiona Apple’s lyrics, voice and piano skills stood out and Sony Music executive Slater gave her a record deal.

About Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple was welcomed into the music industry in 1994 after giving a demo tape with three songs to a friend who worked as a babysitter for music publicist Kathryn Schenker. The publicist then passed on the tape to Andy Slater, the Sony Music executive and signed Apple to a record deal. Two years later, Fiona Apple’s debut album “Tidal" was released and became a three times platinum in the U.S. after selling 2.7 million copies. Her most noteworthy singles included “Never Is a Promise”, “Criminal”, “Shadowboxer” and “Sleep to Dream”, which led to the 1997 MTS Video Music Award for Best New Artist. By 1998, Apple made covers of Across the Universe and ‘Please Send Me Someone to Love’ for the soundtrack of cult classic, Pleasantville.
By the end of the 1990s, Apple released her second album, “When the Pawn…” and received positive reactions from Rolling Stone and the New York Times. Apple then collaborated with Johnny Cash on a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge over troubled Water”, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. By 2002, Apple started recording her third album, but after finishing most of the songs, the tracks were leaked online and Fiona Apple decided to re-do all of the tracks and include a new track, which led to a delayed 2005 release, but became the highest-charting album throughout Apple’s career. Fiona Apple is scheduled to release her fourth album by 2009.
